The museum sections
Since its inception, the Diocesan Museum has had the task of ensuring the protection and custody primarily of works of art whose preservation was rendered precarious by their location in church buildings that were closed to worship, dilapidated or unsafe.
The permanent collections, located on the first floor, consist of paintings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, sacred goldsmithing and textiles for liturgical use, of which the Museum has one of the largest collections in the world.
The works of painting and sculpture are mainly from the Brescia and Veneto areas: a masterpiece of the 15th century Veneto is Antonio Vivarini’s Polyptych of Saint Ursula from the church of San Pietro in Oliveto in Brescia.
