The first one was\u00a0<strong>Ottavio Ross<\/strong>i in 1620: he ascribes the painting to\u00a0<strong>Vincenzo Foppa<\/strong>\u00a0without describing it in detail.\r\n\r\n<span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-18\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-18\">The committee of<\/span>\u00a0the polyptych is the\u00a0<strong>Congregation of the Regulars Canons of St. George<\/strong>, born in\u00a0<strong>Venice<\/strong>\u00a0at the end of the 14th\u00a0century. The company had been living in\u00a0<strong>Brescia<\/strong>\u00a0since 1437 in the monastery of San Pietro.\r\n\r\n<span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-19\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-19\">After the convent<\/span>\u00a0had been abolished under Napoleon, these three panels became part of the art collection of the\u00a0<strong>Seminario Diocesano di Brescia<\/strong>, thus following the many transfers before being placed in the\u00a0<strong>Museo Diocesano di Brescia<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-20\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-20\">The first mention<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>Antonio Vivarini<\/strong>\u00a0as the author of the polyptych was suggested by\u00a0<strong>Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle<\/strong>\u00a0in 1868 and confirmed in 1871 by the English critic\u00a0<strong>Joseph Archer Crowe<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<strong><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-21\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-21\">Gaetano Panazza<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Camillo Boselli<\/strong>\u00a0dated the artwork between 1440 and 1445 and underlined an artistic discrepancy between the side panels and the central one of St. Ursula. For this reason, they were the first to refer to a co-working between\u00a0<strong>Antonio Vivarini<\/strong>, his brother\u00a0<strong>Bartolomeo<\/strong>\u00a0and his brother-in-law\u00a0<strong>Giovanni d\u2019Alemagna<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-22\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-22\">Around 1540, the<\/span>\u00a0central panel depicting\u00a0<em>St. Ursula<\/em>\u00a0<em>and her companions<\/em>\u00a0inspired\u00a0<strong>Alessandro Bonvicini<\/strong>, known as\u00a0<strong>Moretto<\/strong>, for his two canvases with the same subject. One stays still now inside the Church of Saint Clement in\u00a0<strong>Brescia<\/strong>. The second canvas was painted for the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene and now is exposed in the\u00a0<strong>Pinacoteca of the Castello Sforzesco<\/strong>\u00a0in Milan.\r\n\r\n<span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-23\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-23\">According to the<\/span>\u00a0legend, St. Ursula was the daughter of the King of England but secretly converted herself to the\u00a0<strong>Christian faith<\/strong>. Instead of marrying a pagan prince, after a vision, she asked his father permission to wait three years more or until the prince converted himself to the same faith.\r\n\r\n<span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-24\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-24\">When time ran<\/span>\u00a0out, under the suggestion of another vision, the princess and ten thousand virgin companions started a pilgrimage to\u00a0<strong>Rome<\/strong>, where the Pope had received them.\r\n\r\n<span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-25\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-25\">During the return<\/span>\u00a0trip, near the city of\u00a0<strong>Cologne<\/strong>, the group was captured by\u00a0<strong>King Attilas<\/strong>. He ordered his soldiers to kill all the virgins except Ursula because he wanted to marry her. The princess refused, so the king ordered her to be pierced by an arrow.\r\n\r\n<span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-26\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-26\">In the central<\/span>\u00a0panel, the princess is depicted at the center while holding the English flags. The crown on her head and the royal dress remark his royal lineage.\r\n\r\n<span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-27\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-27\">The\u00a0<\/span><strong>decorativism<\/strong>\u00a0of both the halo and the crown, the cannelloni-shaped drapery, the\u00a0<strong>ivory incarnates<\/strong>\u00a0with light pink shades, and her\u00a0<strong>slight figure<\/strong>\u00a0are the last residuals of the\u00a0<strong>International Gothic style.<\/strong>\u00a0At the same time, the thoughtful companions circling her vaguely forewarn the passage to\u00a0<strong>Renaissance<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-28\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-28\">On the contrary,<\/span>\u00a0<em>St. Peter and St. Paul<\/em>\u00a0recall the\u00a0<strong>Renaissance<\/strong>\u00a0period entirely. Their plastic vigor, severe composition, and molded figures are made with an efficient\u00a0<strong>chiaroscuro<\/strong>\u00a0and a more firm and solid drawing.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"mt-section-base\">\r\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-center lg:flex-row lg:flex-wrap lg:justify-center 3xl:px-side-spacer-desktop\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>","descrizione_en":"","opera_luogo_associato":"","tipo_card_opera":"standard","opera_hide_events":false,"opera_events_list":"","opera_hide_card_list":false,"opera_post_card_list":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
